What Happens During a Contemporary Art Private Viewing?
A private viewing creates time for scale, condition, questions and uncertainty that a crowded event rarely allows. A collector-led guide grounded in material, evidence and lived experience.
Preparation begins with interests
The gallery should ask about artists, media, budget range, rooms and existing collection without demanding private information that does not improve selection.
The object stays central
View the work from several distances. Inspect condition and material details. Compare options using the same criteria rather than changing the argument for each preferred sale.
Records should be available
Review price, dimensions, medium, certificate, provenance, edition, care and included components. Questions that require verification can remain open after the meeting.
The decision can wait
Real scarcity may be stated accurately, but a private setting should not manufacture urgency. A useful viewing leaves the collector with clearer judgment.
