See enough work to develop a reaction
Visit more than one gallery, exhibition or studio presentation. Notice which artists remain in mind after the event atmosphere fades.
Ask direct questions
Request artist background, medium, dimensions, date, condition, provenance, price and what documentation travels with the work. A gallery should explain without forcing certainty.
Budget for ownership
Framing or display, delivery, installation, insurance and future care may add to the acquisition price. Keep speculation out of the affordability calculation.
Build a file from the first purchase
Store the invoice, certificate, condition photographs, artist material and correspondence. Good habits are easiest to establish while the collection is small.
