Sustainable Art vs Green Marketing: How Can You Tell?

Green marketing begins where evidence becomes vague, inflated or detached from the artwork itself. A collector-led guide grounded in material, evidence and lived experience.

Look for a subject and a verb

“Made with 100% mulberry silk” identifies a component. “Sustainable luxury” does not explain what happened. Strong claims tell the reader who did what with which material.

Check the boundary

A reusable box does not establish that an entire artwork has low environmental impact. A durable steel system does not answer questions about fabrication, transport or end of life.

Ask for dates and owners

Material records change. The gallery should know who maintains each claim and when it was last verified.

Distrust perfect stories

Real production involves trade-offs. A credible explanation can admit missing data and still describe concrete improvements.

Buy less certainty, more truth

Collectors do not need moral theater. They need enough detail to make a proportionate judgment and to care for the work well.
