An artist may need found metal, silk, wood, photography or installation because canvas cannot create the same physical or social relationship. The collector should look for that reason before celebrating novelty.
Local material is not a shortcut to identity
Bamboo, earth, domestic objects or tropical imagery do not automatically make a work culturally deep. Ask how the material entered the practice and whether the artist can account for its source and meaning.
Fabrication roles deserve credit
Contemporary work may involve printers, welders, framers, designers or technicians. Clear records strengthen authorship and make future care possible.
